European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School "Dynamics of Mediatization"

The triennial Summer School "Dynamics of Mediatization“ takes place at the University of Bremen from 2013 to 2015 and is jointly organized with the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA). 42 Doctoral students from about 20 countries as well as 25 renowned communication and media researchers from all over Europe visit Bremen.

At present our life-worlds are highly “saturated” by the media, no matter whether we focus on private life, on political decision-making, on economics, religion or other fields of human life. In their actual forms, all these aspects of life are highly shaped by media communication in its various forms. In an attempt to describe this and related processes of socio-cultural change, over the past years “mediatization” has become established as one of the new core concepts within media and communication research.

Developing this concept internationally, major contributions have been made by European researchers, beside others from Germany. Against this background, the Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI) at the University of Bremen organizes a summer school entitled “Dynamics of Mediatization”. The aim is to consolidate a pan-EU community of doctoral studies in the field of Media and Communication around the topic of the cultural, social and technological challenges of mediatized communication.
